2 3 T From the Editor This month, we’re going online with our latest edition of Business View Magazine around Labor Day. Labor Day is a federal holiday, celebrated on the first Monday in September. Its purported purpose, when first pro- posed at the end of the 19 th century, was to honor the American labor movement, and thus the social and economic achievements of American workers; their contributions to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the nation. That is why it’s somewhat unfortu- nate that, like many of our national holidays – President’s Day, Thanks- giving, even the Fourth of July - Labor Day has become more and more about selling things. It’s fairly difficult, these days, to ignore the cacophony of sales pitches that accompany this quintessential, American celebration. Don’t get us wrong - we have noth- ing against sales - holiday or other- wise. If the companies that we feature in our pages, and the ones that support us with their advertisements, didn’t sell what they made, we’d be out of business. But, just for the moment, let’s dive more deeply into the ethos behind La- bor Day, which, in essence, is a com- memoration of work. According to Sigmund Freud, and many other well known philosophers and social scien- tists, one’s ability to love and work is deeply connected to one’s degree of happiness and satisfaction with life. As Freud said: “Love and work…work and love…what else is there really?” So, in honor of Labor Day, and all those who labor, here are some other inspiring thoughts and quotes about the nature of work: “In the morning when thou risest unwillingly, let this thought be present - I am rising to the work of a human being. Why then am I dissatisfied if I am going to do the things for which I exist and for which I was brought into the world?” - Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. “The crowning fortune of a man is to be born to some pursuit which finds him employment and happiness, whether it be to make baskets, or broadswords, or canals, or statues, or songs.” ― Poet and Philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson. “Work is a blessing. God has so arranged the world that work is necessary, and He gives us hands and strength to do it. The enjoyment of leisure would be nothing if we had only leisure. It is the joy of work well done that enables us to enjoy rest, just as it is the experiences of hunger and thirst that make food and drink such pleasures.” - Author and Speaker, Elisabeth Elliot. “No work is insignificant. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.” - Civil Rights Leader, Martin Luther King. Finally, here are the words of Indian poet, Kahlil Gibran: “When you work, you fulfill a part of earth’s furthest dream, assigned to you when that dream was born. And what is it to work with love? It is to weave the cloth with threads drawn from your heart, even as if your beloved were to wear that cloth. It is to build a house with affection, even as if your beloved were to dwell in that house. It is to sow seeds with tenderness and reap the harvest with joy, even as if your beloved were to eat the fruit. It is to charge all things you fashion with a breath of your own spirit. Work is love made visible” So, Happy Labor Day, everyone. And if you do happen upon a great sale, somewhere, and it’s something that you really want or need – indulge yourself. After all, you worked for it.
