216 217 G reen Marine is an environmental cer- tification program for the North Amer- ican marine industry. Launched in 2007, its participants are ship owners, ports, terminals, and shipyards. It is a voluntary, transparent, and inclusive initiative that addresses key environmental issues, and makes it pos- sible for any marine company operating in Canada or the U.S. to reduce its environmental footprint by un- dertaking con- crete and mea- surable actions. To receive their certification, participants must benchmark their annual environmental performance through the program’s exhaustive self-evaluation guides, have their results verified by an accredited external verifier, and agree to the publication of their individual results.
